Why Isn’t the Standard Out Already?
This isn’t foot-dragging — it’s a genuinely new category of product for the UK grid.
An independent 96-page safety study (commissioned from Arceio/Eurofins) tested UK ring-final circuits at 800W export and found no unsafe behaviour, but flagged that several existing devices exceeded electromagnetic interference limits at full power. That’s exactly the kind of finding a standard needs to close off before it’s safe to let millions of households self-install. Trade bodies including the IET, NICEIC and Electrical Safety First have all publicly pushed for the standard to be right rather than rushed, and the government’s own plug-in solar consultation only closed on 30 June 2026, with a formal response due by 22 July.
Worth knowing: the UK isn’t inventing this from scratch. Germany’s plug-in solar route has run for years under its own DIN VDE standard, with roughly 1.2 million registered systems and an 800 watt cap that the UK’s interim spec deliberately mirrors. The difference is that Germany’s radial wiring circuits aren’t quite the same as the UK’s ring-final circuits, which is exactly why the independent safety study above was commissioned rather than simply copying the German rulebook wholesale.
