Straightforward Solar Guidance, From People Who’ve Actually Worked In the Industry
We built Solar Briton to answer the questions we kept getting asked by friends, neighbours and former clients: what does solar actually cost, which grants are real, and who can you trust to install it properly? Here’s who we are and how we work.
Why We Started This Site
Solar in the UK isn’t complicated because the technology is difficult — it’s complicated because the information around it is scattered, out of date, or written by whoever’s trying to sell you a system. Prices vary wildly between installers, grant schemes change without much warning, and it’s genuinely hard to know whether a quote you’ve been given is fair.
We started Solar Briton to fix that. Our aim is simple: help people make confident, well-informed decisions about going solar without wasting their time or their money working it out the hard way. Everything on this site is written in plain English, checked against real data, and updated when the facts change — not when it suits an advertiser.
Meet the Team
Christopher is the founder and lead author of Solar Briton. He studied engineering at the University of Cambridge before spending more than 15 years at AECOM, one of the world’s largest infrastructure and engineering consultancies, working on building services and renewable energy projects for clients across the UK. He set up Solar Briton to bring that same technical rigour to everyday solar advice — cutting through sales patter and giving readers the same level of honesty he’d expect from a professional engineering report.
Alice is Solar Briton’s co-author, bringing more than 20 years’ experience as a Renewable Energy Consultant at Lightsource bp, one of the world’s largest solar power companies. Over her career she has worked across solar projects ranging from small residential systems to large-scale developments, and has seen first-hand how confusing the buying process can be for ordinary homeowners. She joined Solar Briton to help translate that industry experience into guidance people can actually use.
What We’re Trying to Do
Every guide on this site is built around three promises to you:
- Plain-English costs — real UK price ranges for panels, batteries, heat pumps and inverters, not vague “from £X” marketing figures.
- Up-to-date grants and rules — including VAT relief, the Smart Export Guarantee, and schemes like the Warm Homes: Local Grant, checked against current government guidance.
- Unbiased regional guidance — because sun hours, grid rules and installer availability genuinely differ across the UK, and a one-size-fits-all answer isn’t much use to anyone.
How Solar Briton Makes Money
Solar Briton is free for you to use. We keep it that way through two main sources of income:

This income pays for the research, fact-checking and updates that go into every guide on this site. It does not influence which products or companies we recommend, or how we describe them — our editorial judgement comes first, and any commercial relationship comes second.
How We Research and Fact-Check Our Content
Every guide starts with primary sources rather than other blogs. Where a page discusses costs, we check current supplier and installer pricing directly. Where it discusses grants or schemes, we check the official guidance itself — for example, the government’s own Warm Homes: Local Grant page on GOV.UK — rather than relying on secondhand summaries that can quickly go out of date. Technical claims are checked against manufacturer data and against Christopher and Alice’s own professional knowledge from their years working in the industry.
