The solar grants picture in Scotland has changed a fair bit over the last year or so, and a lot of what you’ll read online is already out of date. Here’s the plain-English version of what’s actually available right now — which schemes are live, who qualifies, and how to layer them together to cut your costs as much as possible.

ECO4 — Still the Best Route for Low-Income Households

If you tick those boxes, you could get solar panels installed completely free through ECO4. The scheme was originally going to close in March 2026, but the government extended it to 31 December 2026. There’s no ECO5 planned — so this is a real deadline. Funding places fill up on a first-come, first-served basis, so don’t hang about if you think you’re eligible.

Home Energy Scotland — Loans, Not Grants, for Solar PV

This is the one that trips most people up. The Home Energy Scotland (HES) direct grant for solar PV closed in June 2024. Any article still saying otherwise is out of date. What’s still open is an interest-free loan of up to £5,000 for hybrid solar PV systems (panels combined with water heating). No income test, no benefit requirement — it’s open to any Scottish homeowner.

Warmer Homes Scotland is the Scottish Government’s main scheme for homeowners and private tenants in — or at risk of — fuel poverty. Free energy improvements are provided after a property survey; solar panels can be included but aren’t guaranteed. Think of it as a tailored support package rather than a straightforward solar grant. 0% VAT — The Simple Saving That Every Homeowner Gets

All residential solar and battery storage installations in the UK attract zero VAT until 31 March 2027. No application needed — your MCS-certified installer should apply it automatically. On a typical 4kW Scottish system, that’s a one-off saving of around £1,200–£1,400. Always check it’s reflected in any quote you receive — if it isn’t, ask why.

Smart Export Guarantee — Get Paid for What You Don’t Use

Once your system is up, you can sign up to the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) and get paid for every unit of surplus electricity you send back to the grid. Current rates run from 5p up to around 15p per kWh depending on your supplier — British Gas and Octopus Energy are consistently near the top. A typical 4kWp system earns around £150–£300 per year in export payments. You’re free to choose a different SEG supplier to your normal electricity provider — it’s worth shopping around.
