Solar Panels Scotland Grants 2026: Every Scheme You Can Claim Right Now
Solar Panels Scotland Grants 2026: Every Scheme You Can Claim Right Now
The solar grants picture in Scotland has changed a fair bit over the last year or so, and a lot of what you’ll read online is already out of date. Here’s the plain-English version of what’s actually available right now — which schemes are live, who qualifies, and how to layer them together to cut your costs as much as possible.

ECO4 — Still the Best Route for Low-Income Households
If you tick those boxes, you could get solar panels installed completely free through ECO4. The scheme was originally going to close in March 2026, but the government extended it to 31 December 2026. There’s no ECO5 planned — so this is a real deadline. Funding places fill up on a first-come, first-served basis, so don’t hang about if you think you’re eligible.
Apply directly through your energy supplier or via the Simple Energy Advice service at gov.uk.
Home Energy Scotland — Loans, Not Grants, for Solar PV
This is the one that trips most people up. The Home Energy Scotland (HES) direct grant for solar PV closed in June 2024. Any article still saying otherwise is out of date. What’s still open is an interest-free loan of up to £5,000 for hybrid solar PV systems (panels combined with water heating). No income test, no benefit requirement — it’s open to any Scottish homeowner.
If you’re also considering a heat pump, HES grants of up to £9,000 (rural) plus a further interest-free loan are still very generous — and many Scottish households combine a heat pump grant with a solar loan into one clean upgrade. Warmer Homes Scotland — For Households in Fuel Poverty
Warmer Homes Scotland is the Scottish Government’s main scheme for homeowners and private tenants in — or at risk of — fuel poverty. Free energy improvements are provided after a property survey; solar panels can be included but aren’t guaranteed. Think of it as a tailored support package rather than a straightforward solar grant. You access it through the same Home Energy Scotland gateway: 0808 808 2282.
0% VAT — The Simple Saving That Every Homeowner Gets
All residential solar and battery storage installations in the UK attract zero VAT until 31 March 2027. No application needed — your MCS-certified installer should apply it automatically. On a typical 4kW Scottish system, that’s a one-off saving of around £1,200–£1,400. Always check it’s reflected in any quote you receive — if it isn’t, ask why.
Smart Export Guarantee — Get Paid for What You Don’t Use
Once your system is up, you can sign up to the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) and get paid for every unit of surplus electricity you send back to the grid. Current rates run from 5p up to around 15p per kWh depending on your supplier — British Gas and Octopus Energy are consistently near the top. A typical 4kWp system earns around £150–£300 per year in export payments. You’re free to choose a different SEG supplier to your normal electricity provider — it’s worth shopping around.
Stacking Your Savings — How to Make the Most of It
Most of these incentives can run alongside each other. Here’s how a typical Scottish homeowner buying a 4kW system in 2026 could look at the full picture:

The Warm Homes Plan — Watch This Space
In January 2026, the UK government announced a £15 billion Warm Homes Plan to succeed ECO4. Around £1.5 billion is earmarked for devolved administrations including Scotland. As of 2026, the Scottish-specific details — exact launch date, who qualifies, and what it covers — haven’t been confirmed. We’ll update this guide as soon as that changes. For now, ECO4 is the active fully-funded route — act before December.
