How much do solar panels cost in the UK in 2026?
A standard home solar system in the UK costs between £5,000 and £11,000 fully installed, depending on size. Most 3–4 bedroom homes go for a 4kWp system at around £6,500–£8,000. Since April 2022, residential solar installations qualify for 0% VAT — a saving that puts a few hundred pounds straight back in your pocket before the panels even go up.
How much money can I actually save with solar panels?
A 4kWp system typically saves a UK household £700–£1,000 per year on energy bills, on top of any income from the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) for surplus power you export to the grid. Do solar panels qualify for 0% VAT in the UK?
Yes. Since 1 April 2022, the installation of solar panels, battery storage and solar thermal systems at residential properties in England, Scotland and Wales is charged at 0% VAT. This applies to both the equipment and the labour. Commercial solar installations are subject to 20% standard-rate VAT unless specific relief conditions are met.
How long before solar panels pay for themselves?
The typical payback period for a UK solar installation is 6 to 10 years. With electricity prices at current levels, many of our customers are reaching breakeven closer to the 6-year mark — especially those with battery storage. After that, you’re essentially generating free electricity for the remaining 15–20+ years of the system’s life.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels in the UK?
In most cases, no. Fitting solar panels to a home in England, Wales or Scotland counts as permitted development, so no planning application is needed. There are exceptions: listed buildings, some conservation areas, and certain flat-roof installations may require approval. It’s always worth a quick check with your local authority if you think your property might fall into one of those categories.
What size solar panel system do I need for my home?
For most 3–4 bedroom UK homes, a 4kWp system of around 8–10 panels is the sweet spot. Smaller homes suit 2.5–3kWp. Larger properties or those charging an EV should look at 5–6kWp. The easiest starting point: check your annual kWh consumption on your energy bill and aim for a system that covers around 60–80% of your demand.
How long does solar panel installation take from start to finish?
The physical installation takes 1–2 days for a standard home. Before that, there’s a survey and design phase. Afterwards, your installer registers the system with your DNO (Distribution Network Operator) and you apply for your SEG tariff. From first enquiry to a fully live, exporting system, most customers are up and running within 4–8 weeks.

Do solar panels actually work in the UK’s cloudy weather?
Absolutely — and this is the myth we bust most often. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not just direct sunshine, so overcast days still produce useful power. The UK averages 1,100–1,600 sunshine hours per year depending on location. Scotland generates less than Cornwall, but both produce enough solar energy year-round to make the investment genuinely worthwhile.
What are the main types of solar panels available in the UK?
The main three are monocrystalline (most efficient, ideal for smaller roofs), polycrystalline (slightly less efficient but cost-effective for larger roofs), and half-cut or bifacial panels (improved shade tolerance, excellent all-round performance). What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) and am I eligible?
The Smart Export Guarantee is a UK government-backed scheme requiring licensed energy suppliers to pay you for every unit of surplus solar electricity you export to the national grid. Any household with an MCS-certified solar installation and a smart meter can apply. Rates vary by supplier — currently between around 4p and 15p per kWh — so it pays to compare tariffs when setting up.
Are there any solar panel grants available in the UK in 2026?
There’s no universal solar grant in 2026, but real support exists. Low-income households may qualify under the ECO4 scheme. The Great British Insulation Scheme covers renewable measures in some cases. Some local councils run their own home improvement programmes too. The 0% VAT rate is itself a meaningful saving, and SEG income kicks in from day one.
What warranty do solar panels come with?
Most quality panels carry a 10–25 year product warranty and a 25–30 year performance guarantee, typically ensuring at least 80% of original output at the 25-year mark. How much maintenance do solar panels need?
Very little, honestly. Solar panels have no moving parts and are built to handle UK weather without fuss. An occasional clean — once or twice a year, or after prolonged dry spells — keeps output at its best. We’d suggest a professional health check every 3–5 years to look at the inverter, wiring and mounting. Other than that, they largely look after themselves.
