Which Schemes Can Actually Fund Solar Panels?
The Warm Homes Plan is not a single form you fill in. It is a collection of routes — each aimed at a different type of household. Here is where solar panel grants fit in 2026:

The Warm Homes: Local Grant — The Main Free Solar Route
This is the one most people mean when they search for a Warm Homes Grant for solar panels. Your local council funds and organises everything — you pay nothing. To qualify, you need to meet all three criteria below:
If you tick all three, apply directly at gov.uk/apply-warm-homes-local-grant. Your local council will contact you within 10 working days to arrange a free home survey. If funding is available in your area, they will organise the solar installation — and any other improvements agreed — at no cost to you.
ECO4: Apply Before December 2026 or Miss It Entirely
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme closes permanently on 31 December 2026. There is no ECO5. If you receive means-tested benefits, have an EPC of D or below, and your home uses electric heating, you may still qualify for fully funded solar panels before the deadline. Apply through your energy supplier or an MCS-certified broker — do not respond to cold-callers.
Scam warning: cold-callers offering “free solar”
Legitimate Warm Homes and ECO4 installations are arranged through your local council or a verified MCS-certified installer on the Ofgem register. Nobody will knock on your door or call you unsolicited to offer genuinely free solar panels. If they do, it is a scam.
0% VAT on Solar Panels — A Saving for Every UK Homeowner
Even if you earn too much for any grant, there is one significant saving anyone can claim right now. Solar panels and battery storage are zero-rated for VAT until March 2027 — that is a 20% saving off the top of your installation cost, applied automatically by your installer.
Income Above £36,000? Your Options in 2026

Coming April 2027: 0% interest loans for all homeowners

Once Your Panels Are In: Earn from the Smart Export Guarantee
Once your solar panels are registered with your Distribution Network Operator, you can earn money on every unit of surplus electricity you export to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Start by checking your EPC rating (free at the GOV.UK EPC register), then work out whether your household income falls at or below £36,000.
